However (Hirokazu Koreeda, Japan 1991)

Wonderful early TV documentary by Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda following two people's path of live to an early death by suicide - one is Mr. Yamanouchi, who works for the Japanese welfare ministry, after giving up his literary ambitions; the other one is Nobuko Harashima, who, as a single child, survived the fire-bombing of Tokyo in WW II but never got her feet on the ground after falling seriously ill. She works on and off as a bar hostess, but gets seriously harrassed by government employees as she applies for social welfare security.

Two tragic lifes lived "on opposite sides" of the societal system, two people doing their best endlessly struggling - but both ultimately driven to suicide by the Japanese bureaucracy.

The film title refers to a poem Yamanouchi wrote as a student called "Shikashi ... " / 然し / しかし (meaning However), which is the one his widowed wife reads to the audience during the film. An early Koreeda, definitely worth watching though not easily available. You will have to hunt this one down.

Abschied

Micha hat diesen Blog fast 15 Jahre mit großer Leidenschaft geführt. Seine Liebe zum asiatischen Kino hat ihn in dieser Zeit in Kontakt mit ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen gebracht. Neben seinem Blog hatte Micha 2021 noch ein neues Projekt aufgenommen: Gemeinsam mit der Videokünstlerin Sandra Ehlen und Thomas Laufersweiler von SchönerDenken hatte er begonnen, in einem Podcast das filmische Werk von Keisuke Kinoshita zu besprechen. 25 Beiträge sind so bis zu Michas Tod im Dezember noch entstanden. Woman of the Lake / Onna no mizumi (Yoshishige Yoshida, Japan 1966)

Die schöne und unglücklich verheiratete Miyako (Mariko Okada) hat eine Affäre mit dem jungen Kitano (Tamotsu Hayakawa), mit dem sie sich tagsüber in Hotels im Stadtzentrum trifft. Ihr Gatte Yuzo (Shinsuke Ashida) scheint davon nichts mitzubekommen; er ist ein erfolgreicher Geschäftsmann mit einer deutlich wertkonservativen Einstellung. An einer Stelle im Film sagt er einmal, eine gute Ehefrau sei leicht wie ein Lufthauch, man würde ihre Gegenwart niemals bemerken. Diese Ruhe ist nun bedroht, da Kitano von Miyako im Hotel erotische Nacktbilder gemacht hat, die Miyako dummerweise auf dem Heimweg vom Stelldichein in der Tasche mit dabei hat. In dieser Nacht wird sie von einem Unbekannten bedrängt - und sie wehrt sich mit der Tasche, worauf ihr der Mann sie entreißt. Am nächsten Tag bekommt sie einen Anruf von dem Erpresser, sie solle zu ihm in ein Seebad fahren, und das Geld für die Bilder mitbringen. Dass es dem Erpresser nicht nur ums Geld geht, ist Miyako klar, so gut kennt sie...

Aido: Slave of Love (Susumu Hani, Japan 1969)

Here are some pictures I took during a private screening of Susumu Hani's extremely rare and seldom seen feature film AIDO - SLAVE OF LOVE , which is the movie Hani made after the famous NANAMI: INFERNO OF FIRST LOVE. The film is beautifully shot, completely absorbing and structurally abandoning all narrative consensus - it is somehow - for most of the time - a subjective trip into the mind of the protagonist Shusei (Kenzo Kawarasaki). As you can asume, a dreamlike state predominates the film; and with its' devotion to extensively focussing on the details of the body while making love, presented in detailed close-ups, aswell as its' beautifully daring setpieces, it reminded me to some extent of Toshio Matsumoto's experimental oeuvre, as for example in his short film PHANTOM .
